These are photos i took this weekend at Central Park of Christo's Gates, a fabulous project and a great success. With the sun shining thru the tarps they were brilliant and uplifting. The breeze gave them the peaceful feeling of curtains blowing in an open window. There was nothing to buy, no lines to wait in, no admissions fee. There were crowds, but the park is so huge that they were evenly dispursed. There were so many interesting views of the gates that it made photographing them very enjoyable. One photo I wish I had taken was of a child, who, riding on her fathers shoulders, reached up & touched every banner. She must have touched hundreds over the course of several miles. As above, so below; the people were truly as colorful as the banners, which, is one of the things I love about New York.
How big is art? The Gates, when seen as open windows, offered fresh views of the park, bringing art to the forefront. Perhaps Christo intended for us to have a fresh perspective on art in general. I picture Christo as being one who wishes he could have been the one to turn the maples orange in the fall. The real "art" of our environment is so much larger than these installations Christo & Jean Claude do, and when looked at in that perspective, this installation is really not that huge. This project was a true "gift" from the artist...perhaps in that way, Christo really does wish to play God.
